Let's Get Together Movie Night
January 10th at 7:30 pm
Grab your date or a friend for a "get together". The Education Committee will be showing the movie Sod and Stubble. Some of this movie was filmed near Downs KS.

Sod and Stubble is the story of a German immigrant, Henry Ise, and his devoted wife, Rosie Haag Ise, who with tenactity and devotion fight to craft a home for their family on the plains of Kansas. The movie features actors such as Barry Corbin (Maurice from Northern Exposure) and Mary McDonough (Erin from The Walton's).
There will be a free will donation as well as snacks. Doors open at 7:15 pm with the movie beginning at 7:30 pm. Hope to see you there!
Statehood Ball
January 31st at 7:00 pm
Sterl Hall - Abilene KS
Lace up your dancing shoes and join us on Saturday, January 31st for the Statehood Ball as we celebrate 165 years of Kansas being a state. This year's ball will be held at Sterl Hall in Abilene from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm with the doors opening at 6:30 pm. Tickets are $10 with children under 5 being free.

It's Movie Time
February 21st at 7:30 pm
"Bad Blood" is a story about events leading up to the Civil War along the border of Kansas and Missouri during the years 1854 and 1861. It is told through the eyes of Missourians and Kansans with a balanced approach to both sides of the thorny issue of slavery.
Doors open at 7:15 pm and Movie shows at 7:30 pm. Cost is by donation. Popcorn, candy and water are available.
​​Dickinson County Scholastic Art Show
Students Grades K - 12th
February 8th thru February 15th
Each year we are excited to showcase the artistic talent of our Dickinson Countky K - 12 students. The art show will feature everything from pencil drawings to paintings and from ceramic pieces to chalk drawings.

We invite you to come check out these masterpieces. We also invite you to tour our new Farm Toy Museum, as well as the rest of museum.

Birdhouse 101 with Austin
February 28th at 10:00 am
Kids...grab your hammer and tape measure and construct a Birdhouse.
This is for ages 7 to 14. Cost is $15 per person with a limit of 10 participants.

Sunday Afternoon Matinee
The American Parade - The 34th State
March 15th at 2:30 pm
This film is about the early days of settling a homestead. It was filmed near Elm Springs in Marion County. Dickinson County residents were in the movie and will be discussing the making of the movie.
Doors open at 2:15 pm and Movie shows at 2:30 pm. Cost is by donation. Popcorn, candy and water are available. ​​

​Ida Stover Eisenhower Memorial Quilt Show
April 4th: 10 am to 5 pm
April 5th: 1 pm to 5 pm
April 6th thru April 11th: 10 am to 5 pm
April 12th: 1 pm to 5 pm
Attend our quilt show to see beautiful quilts on display. All Dickinson County quilts are welcome and can range from recently completed to the late 1880s. Viewers can vote on their favorite quilt. We are reducing our rate to $5 per person to go through the museum and the quilt show. If you wish to display your quilt, they must be checked in by Thursday, April 2nd.

​​​Spring Tombstone Talks
April 12th starting at 1:00 pm
This years Spring Talk will feature Hope Cemetery, Hope KS. Join us for an afternoon guided walking tour through the cemetery to hear re-enactors tell the stories of our ancestors. Our amazing portrayers will be portraying six residents of the Hope community. You will hear stories about the lives of Solomon Stauffer, Queen Cruse, Glen Rubin, Sarah Carpenter, Newell Thurstin and Della Swayze.
Tour slots are: 1:00 pm; 1:20 pm; 1:40 pm; 2:00 pm; 2:20 pm; 2:40 pm. Purchase tickets in advance at $10 each. Please let the staff know what time slot you would like when you sign up.

Dutch Oven Cooking Class
Outdoors over an Open Fire
April 25th from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm
This class will teach you how to prepare a full meal in a Dutch Oven. The meal will be 9-10 courses, including appetizers, entrée and desserts. Attendees must be age 18 or older and physically able to be around a hot fire. There is a registration form to complete. Cost is $45 per person which includes the gate fee to all Plains, Trains and Cowboys events.

Plains, Trains and Cowboys
April 24th & 25th from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm
The Heritage Center, Old Abilene Town and Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad have teamed up hold this event as a 250th U.S.A. celebration on the grounds of the Heritage Center and Old Abilene Town. Celebration of Western Heritage through singers, cowboy laureates, wild west show and educational experiences and a whole lot more. The Lazy Wayne Band will play Friday evening at Old Abilene Town. Dust off your boots and make sure to bring your family and friends to Abilene on April 24th and 25th. Watch our Facebook page for more information on this event.

​Pioneer Camp
Week 1: June 1st - 5th
Week 2: June 8th - 12th
Pioneer Camp was developed in 1989 with the concept of acquanting today's children with the life style of children in the past in a fun and educational manner. Campers must be ages 8 to 11 (3rd to 5th grade). Enrollment form along with payment of camp fee must be submitted by April 26th. Fee for non-members is $100 for each camper. If you are currently a member of Dickinson County Historical Society, your campers fee is $100 for each camper and $75 for each camper after that. Slots fill up quickly, so enroll as soon as you can.

Memories of the Prairie
Experience first-hand stories, educational programs and re-enactors bring history to life at the Historical Society and Museum on Saturdays during the summer. Come learn about the history of Dickinson County and Kansas from those that have lived it.

​​Ice Cream Social​ & Baked Goods Auction
July 18th at 7:00 pm
This annual event is a time to enjoy homemade ice cream and good fellowship with a chance to take home a pie, cake, cookies or other baked goods up for auction. Auction revenue benefits the Historical Society.

Lace up your tennis shoes and grab your jackets for this year's fall Tombstone Talks. Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased at the Heritage Center during business hours.

Old Fashioned Christmas
December 4th from 6 pm to 8 pm
December 5th from 4 pm to 8 pm
Come enjoy an old fashioned Christmas in our lighted village with a live nativity in the barn, rides on a 1901 wooden carousel, a prairie Christmas in the authentic log cabin, live Christmas music, a craft for kids in the one-room schoolhouse, German foods in the historic Burkland Grocery Store and much, much more.
