SCHOOL TOURS

Many Schools take field trips to the Heritage Center each year to learn about the history of Kansas.  Each year approx. 100 area third grade students come to the center in late January as part of the Statehood Celebration.  Kansas became a state on January 29, 1861.

A museum helper (shown at left) explains how life was in the early days of statehood for a group of area school children. The students also visit the cabin, climb on the covered wagon, and ride the Carousel.

2,500 school children each year explore the communication revolution brought about with the invention of the telephone.

The Director of the Telephone Museum  is shown at right as she explains how the phone works.

Call the center to schedule your classes tour.

School Tour Rates:  $2.00 per student including Carousel ride.  (One adult admission free per every 8 students, although there is a charge to ride Carousel)

PIONEER CAMP

Pioneer Camp --- An opportunity for youth from second grade through fifth grade to experience the ways of their ancestors.  Sessions use the Heritage Center's cabin setting and involve participants in cooking, cleaning and other daily living activities required 100 years ago on the Kansas prairie.  Skills include churning butter and baking the bread to spread it on.  Visitors to the center during the two weeks of the camps often become involved in the activities, adding to the education process as well as the fun had by the 'campers'.   In 2006, the sessions are scheduled for June 5-9 and June 12-16.   Reservations are required.  Fee.

JUNIOR HISTORY CLUB

The Junior History program is designed for Middle School youth to explore history in a fun and exciting way.  They are introduced to different aspects of history.  Topics include community and family research, working with historic photographs, and developing a historic display.  Members will also learn archival and curatorial skills used to store and display historic items. They visit many historical places in the county such as the Lebold Mansion. Community projects and living history programs will also be a part of the program.
