Historical Society

The Dickinson County Historical Society is a non-profit organization governed by board members from the county.  The society was founded in 1928 to bring together those interested in preserving the history of Dickinson County.  Membership is open to anyone and information is given on the next tab.

The society's major function is to discover and collect any materials which have history of Dickinson County.  The society also makes it accessible and possible for anyone to view or examine such materials.

The Historical Museum has been located at its current position since 1971, prior to this the museum was located in the basement of the Abilene Public Library.  The current land in which the Heritage Center sits was purchased from the Eisenhower Foundation and was an antique car museum prior to becoming our museum.  The new location made it possible to house larger displays and to be able to restore and locate our buildings in the outdoor museum.

The society also publishes historical materials and marks historic buildings and sites in the county.
